A sample taken from the Zeeland breeding grounds found that 65% of the oysters were free of the Bonamia parasite.

Using these and other healthy oysters, the Rich North Sea is developing Bonamia-free flat oyster breeding programme. We do this in close cooperation with the Kweek & Onderzoek Platte Oester Nederland: a consortium of Stichting Zeeschelp, Roem van Yerseke, Wageningen Marine Research, Bureau Waardenburg, NIOZ Texel, Edmelja BV and Hogeschool Zeeland.

In the last few days, some oysters have already spread larvae in the breeding water. Soon we will be able to see the first small oysters with the naked eye! Within Kweek & Onderzoek Platte Oester Nederland we will be able to do further research into the optimal levels of food, temperature and bacteria for the growth of flat oysters.
