The North Sea Agreement was adopted with broad support in the House of Representatives. The agreement is an important step in realizing a healthy and resilient North Sea.
In the North Sea Agreement, the nature and environmental organisations, the energy sector (gas, oil and wind), the seaports and part of the fishing sector have made agreements to meet the energy transition tasks from the Climate Agreement, for nature restoration and for a healthy future for fishing. The North Sea Agreement contributes to the development of a healthy Dutch North Sea.
Balance of interests
The North Sea Agreement is a compromise because space is scarce in the North Sea. In an intense and lengthy process, each of the parties in the North Sea consultation gave something and took something and we managed to find the balance between the interests.
“Because we listen to each other in the North Sea consultation and understand each other's interests, we can find common solutions and capitalize on opportunities.”
Sybilla Dekker
Support fishing sector
At the beginning of February 2020, all parties in the North Sea Consultation reached agreement on a Negotiation Agreement. The Agreement for the North Sea was adopted in June 2020. Seven of the nine administrative organizations involved in the fishing sector have also agreed to the North Sea Agreement. Although a majority of the fishing managers therefore support the Agreement, it does not represent a majority of the members. Given the divisions, these seven organizations cannot sign on behalf of the entire fishing industry. Dekker: 'We are convinced that more has been achieved together in this Agreement than would have been possible elsewhere in the negotiations with individual sectors. The door is open for the fishing industry to come to the table with one voice and constructively.”
